We welcomed Ajai Thandi, co-founder of Sleepy Owl Coffee, for an engaging session on campus! From starting as an investment banker to pioneering India’s first cold brew coffee brand, Ajai shared his inspiring journey of combining calculated risks with a vision to disrupt the market. He took us through the evolution of Sleepy Owl, from its initial niche product to creating a vibrant coffee culture in a tea-dominated country.
Ajai’s early career as an investment banking analyst gave him a front-row seat to how financial markets function. It was in this high-stakes environment that he honed his analytical skills, developed a strong work ethic, and learned the nuances of market dynamics.
But despite his success in the corporate world, Ajai felt unfulfilled. “I had a burning desire to do something on my own,” he recalls. For Ajai, entrepreneurship was not just about starting a business; it was about creating something meaningful and impactful.
Why Coffee? A Calculated Bet on India’s Beverage Evolution
India is traditionally a tea-drinking nation, with tea deeply embedded in its culture and households. So why venture into coffee, a beverage that has historically played second fiddle? For Ajai, the answer lay in understanding shifting consumer trends.
“Coffee is the only legal drug you can sell to the world,” Ajai says, capturing both the allure and addictive charm of the beverage. More importantly, he recognized the untapped potential of India’s emerging ‘coffee culture.’

Ajai understood this shift. “If you want to be successful in business, you can either create demand or fulfil demand,” he explains. He chose to do both.

At a time when the coffee industry in India was dominated by instant coffee and traditional brews, Sleepy Owl introduced cold brew — a smooth, low-acidity coffee that required no additional brewing. “We were the first company to launch cold brew in the country,” Ajai says. By offering a product that was both novel and convenient, Sleepy Owl tapped into a growing segment of consumers looking for premium coffee experiences. - Staying Focused on the Core Product
While many brands diversify their product lines to appeal to a broader audience, Sleepy Owl chose a different path. The company focused on perfecting its core product — coffee. This decision allowed them to establish themselves as experts in their niche, setting them apart from competitors.

Ajai believes that “disruptors always try to create more demand in spaces where traditional players have stopped innovating.” In a market where big players were content with conventional products, Sleepy Owl stood out by focusing on innovation and product differentiation.
From their eco-friendly packaging to introducing ready-to-drink options, Sleepy Owl consistently pushed the boundaries of what coffee could be in India. Ajai emphasises, “Innovation and product differentiation are critical to a brand’s journey.”
