How much work experience do I need?
If you’re interested in our Post Graduate Programme (PGP TBM) and are wondering what it takes to get shortlisted, you’re in the right place.
At Masters’ Union, we evaluate applications holistically, looking beyond just grades and resumes. We seek future leaders, problem-solvers, and adaptable thinkers who are eager to challenge themselves in a rigorous, real-world business environment.
So, what gives you an edge? In this blog, we break down the key criteria — from academic excellence and work experience to soft skills and leadership potential — that can make your application stand out. Whether you’re from a tech, business, or creative background, here’s everything you need to know before you apply.
Criteria 1: Academic Excellence
At Masters’ Union, you will study alongside peers from leading colleges such as IIT, DTU, VIT, LSR, SRCC, NIFT, NIT, Symbiosis, and others. Some of your peers have studied in foreign universities such as Pennsylvania State University, University of California, ESSEX, Newcastle, and others.
While academic performance isn’t the only deciding factor, it’s a significant part of our evaluation.
Around 90% of our students have a strong academic background. However, we value candidates who may not come from top-tier colleges but have excelled in other meaningful areas such as sports, entrepreneurship, and others. We value individuals who have pursued unconventional paths outside traditional academics.
Criteria 2: Communication Prowess
Another criteria that we consider is your communication skills.
We will assess how well you can articulate your ideas in an essay, interview or classroom discussion. We look for individuals who can confidently express complex ideas and engage with diverse audiences.
It’s not just about speaking fluently but having clarity of thought, coherence in expressing ideas, and the ability to present and pitch with confidence. Business leaders must know how to convince investors, negotiate deals, and build meaningful relationships.
Criteria 3: Relevant Work Experience
A significant 33% of the shortlisting criteria is based on work experience. The companies you have worked for and the roles you have held are important, but so is the quality of that experience.
We value individuals who have demonstrated growth and contributed to their teams or organisations in an impactful way. Whether you’ve led teams, managed projects, or created innovative solutions, we want to know how you’ve made a difference in your workplace.
Soft Skills We Value
Here are some soft skills Masters’ Union looks for in the ideal candidate:
-
- Leadership Potential: Leadership doesn’t always mean holding a prestigious title. It’s about how you’ve managed people, tackled challenges, and achieved your goals — whether in a formal leadership role or in a group project. It’s less about where you’ve been and more about what you’ve done when given the opportunity.
- Humility: While ambition is necessary, humility is equally important. We appreciate candidates who are self-aware, open to feedback, and eager to grow both personally and professionally.
- Adaptability: The ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn is crucial in today’s ever-changing business environment. We look for applicants who demonstrate flexibility and are comfortable with change, embracing new challenges and learning opportunities.
- Eagerness to Learn: We want people who approach learning with a sponge-like mindset, soaking up every experience and opportunity that comes their way. This attitude ensures that you maximise your time at Masters’ Union.
- Grit and Persistence: The road to success is often long and challenging. We value candidates with grit who stay resilient in the face of obstacles. We’re looking for individuals who show determination, persistence, and an unwavering commitment to achieving their goals.
- Utilisation of Opportunities: What matters to us is not just where you’ve been but what you did with the opportunities you were given. Whether you attended a prestigious institution like IIT or another school, how you made the most of that experience is what truly counts.
